Fiber-Rich Diet Linked to Improved Sleep Quality

Want a good night’s sleep? Increasing your fiber intake and diversifying your plant-based foods may be the key, according to recent research. A comprehensive analysis of sleep and dietary data suggests a strong connection between what we eat and how well we sleep.

The Link Between Fiber, Plants and Sleep

A study led by Hagai Rossman at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel analyzed data from over 3500 adults, aged 53 on average, revealing that higher fiber consumption is associated with deeper sleep. Consuming a wider variety of fruits, vegetables, and nuts was also linked to falling asleep faster.

“Increasing fibre and plant variety is already recommended for overall health, carries low risk for most people and may offer sleep benefits as an additional upside,” says Rossman.

How the Study Was Conducted

Unlike previous studies that relied on participants recalling their diets, this research utilized a mobile app for real-time dietary logging. Participants recorded their food intake either during or shortly after consumption over two consecutive days. Sleep was objectively measured using a US Food and Drug Administration-approved device worn on the chest, wrist, and finger, tracking snoring, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and breathing rates.

Marie-Pierre St-Onge at Columbia University in Modern York City noted, “Previous studies haven’t looked at so many dietary and sleep factors.”

Beyond Deep Sleep: The Role of Gut Health

The connection between diet and sleep extends to the gut microbiome. Research suggests that a lack of diversity in gut bacteria can contribute to sleep conditions, highlighting the potential benefits of a fiber-rich diet for improving sleep through gut health.

What Else Can Improve Sleep?

Studies also show that incorporating foods rich in tryptophan and unsaturated fats can lead to better sleep and reduced cravings.
