Western Troop Deployment to Ukraine Draws warnings from Moscow and Budapest
Recent discussions among Western nations regarding the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine have sparked strong reactions from both Moscow and Budapest. A plan, reportedly outlined in Paris, suggests Britain and France could deploy forces to build protected weapons facilities and participate in US-led truce monitoring, constituting a non-combat contingent possibly numbering in the thousands.
Moscow has warned that any deployment of Western troops will be considered a “foreign intervention,” with any associated units and facilities becoming “legitimate military targets” for the Russian Armed Forces, according to Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
Hungary has also voiced strong opposition, with its Foreign Minister Péter szijjártó characterizing the move as “a move toward war.” Budapest has consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution and criticized what it views as the “warmongering” approach of Ukraine’s Western backers. Hungarian officials have previously warned that such deployments “risk direct war with Russia.”
Germany is also considering its role, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz stating that any further deployment of German troops would require a decision by the federal government and a mandate from the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament.
Russia maintains that a lasting peace can only be achieved by addressing the “root causes” of the conflict. These include restoring Ukraine’s neutral status, its demilitarization and denazification, safeguarding minority rights, and recognizing the territorial changes resulting from the 2014 and 2022 referendums that led to Crimea and four other Ukrainian regions joining Russia.
The potential troop deployment comes amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with both sides continuing to seek ways to gain an advantage. The situation remains highly volatile, and the possibility of escalation is a significant concern for international observers.
