Critical Acclaim Outweighs Low Box Office Earnings
The rapid shift to home video follows a theatrical run where box office earnings lagged behind enthusiastic critical notices. Archyde noted that the film opened on September 25 at No. 5 with $13 million. It has since grossed $60.5M worldwide ($35.2M domestic) against a reported $80M budget.
Over four weeks in cinemas, the film was pulled from approximately 1,400 theaters. Despite the box office slowdown, the production earned a 94% Fresh critics rating and a 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an “A” CinemaScore grade. Discussing Film hailed the project as the best DreamWorks film of the decade, according to the official studio press release.
Filipino Folklore Inspires Story of Friends in Nakali
Directed by Academy Award and BAFTA nominees Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado, alongside producer Mark Swift—the creative team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish—the story centers on Filipino folklore and mythology. Centering on best pals Jo and Raissa, the narrative tracks their final evening before heading off in different directions in life. When they discover a mysterious portal, they transport to Nakali, a mythical island populated by magical creatures from their families’ stories. As they search for a way home, a ticking clock threatens to erase their memories and their friendship forever.
The voice cast features H.E.R. as Jo and Liza Soberano as Raissa. The ensemble features performances by Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, and Lea Salonga.
