Caleb Flynn, a 40-year-old former Ohio music pastor and former “American Idol” contestant, stands trial for the February shooting death of his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn, inside their Tipp City home north of Dayton. Prosecutors state Flynn staged a home invasion to cover up the killing amid an ongoing extramarital affair, while defense attorneys argue he is on trial for infidelity rather than murder.
Affair Testimony Highlights Miami County Court Proceedings
The trial in the Miami County Court of Common Pleas featured two days of testimony from 24-year-old Alleigha Botner. Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022 while working as an intern at his church, initiating an affair that lasted more than a year. According to Botner, Flynn expressed hatred for his wife and stated that their two daughters were the only reason he remained in the marriage.
Prosecutors presented more than 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner. In one August 2025 message exchange cited in court, Flynn texted Botner that he spent the night crying and trying to think of ways to kill his wife without going to jail. Botner testified that she responded by telling Flynn she wanted to kill his wife, to which Flynn replied that it “makes two of us.” Botner told the court she now hates Flynn because she believes he murdered his wife.
AI-Generated Love Songs and 911 Audio Presented to Jurors
During the eight days of testimony, prosecutors played AI-generated love songs that Flynn allegedly created for Botner. The tracks featured lyrics about an age-defying romance and dancing on the edge of a life they could choose. Jurors also listened to the 911 call placed by Flynn on the day of the shooting, in which he told a dispatcher that an intruder had broken in and shot his wife multiple times in the head.
Police officers testified that when they arrived at the Tipp City residence, the garage door, a side door, and the center console of Flynn’s pickup truck were open. Flynn told officers he kept a gun in the console, but responding officers recovered no weapon there, and authorities never located the firearm used in the killing. Police interviews played for the jury showed Flynn wearing a sweatshirt bearing the phrase “God-Sized Vision” while maintaining his innocence.
Defense Rests Without Calling Witnesses
Defense attorney Emily Smith acknowledged Flynn’s affair during her opening statement but told jurors that Flynn was not on trial for being a bad husband or for cheating. The defense rested its case on Monday without calling any witnesses, following testimony from 40 prosecution witnesses that included detectives and forensics experts. Prosecutors chose not to call Flynn’s 10- and 12-year-old daughters to the witness stand. Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday, immediately preceding the start of jury deliberations.
