Jeffrey Donaldson Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort, Judge Paul Ramsey said at Newry Crown Court. Former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson was sentenced to 15 years in prison after a jury convicted him of 18 sexual offenses against two women who were children when he abused them.

The 63-year-old former Lagan Valley MP received 11 years for the rape charge and other offences against his first victim, alongside a consecutive four-year sentence for offences committed against his second victim. The abuse took place between 1985 and 2008. Donaldson stood in the dock wearing a blue suit, white shirt and pink tie, showing no emotion as the sentence was handed down, and has been held in Maghaberry Prison since his conviction in June.

Victim Statements Detail Decades of Trauma

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard emotional victim impact statements from both women. One of the victims stated that her childhood was stolen and that she carried shame, anger, and guilt for years, describing the legal process as a living nightmare that severely impacted her career and social life. The other victim, addressing Donaldson and his wife directly, said you both could have saved me from court.

Judge Ramsey noted that he observed the demeanor of both victims during the trial and had no doubt about the permanent mark the abuse left on them. Detective Chief Inspector Leah Crothers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated outside the courthouse that Donaldson had manipulated his victims and exploited their trust, adding that the case demonstrates no one is above the law.

Legal Repercussions and Upcoming Appeals

Donaldson’s barrister, Kieran Vaughan, argued that the former politician was a man of previous good character who did achieve significant things, but added that these convictions obliterate all those achievements he has made in his life. Donaldson was knighted for political services in 2016 and led the DUP from 2021 until his resignation in 2024, but was stripped of his knighthood in July. He has denied all wrongdoing and plans to appeal.

Meanwhile, Eleanor Donaldson was found to have aided and abetted his crimes following a trial of the facts, which was granted on mental health grounds. Judge Ramsey indicated he would deal with her at a later stage once he is in possession of all the relevant documents. Catherine Kierans, head of the Public Prosecution Service’s serious crime unit, praised the victims’ courage in coming forward to seek justice.
