Former NBA guard D’Angelo Russell signed a contract with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, according to a league announcement made on social media on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
NBA Career and Recent Transactions
The Los Angeles Lakers selected Russell as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Over his 11-year career in the United States, he logged 655 regular-season games with 539 starts, holding career averages of 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game.
Aside from his tenure with the Lakers, Russell played for the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Dallas Mavericks. His most productive individual campaign came during the 2018-19 season with Brooklyn, where he earned an All-Star selection after averaging 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per contest.
Russell spent time with the Mavericks last season, appearing in 26 games with three starts while averaging 10.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. Dallas traded him to the Washington Wizards on Feb. 5 as part of a three-team deal, though he never appeared in a game for Washington. The Wizards subsequently sent him to the Memphis Grizzlies on July 8 in a six-team trade, and Memphis waived him in late September.
Transition to the Chinese Basketball Association
By joining the Shanghai Sharks, Russell transitions to the Chinese Basketball Association following his release from Memphis. The CBA announced the transaction on its official social media channels on Sept. 30. Details regarding the terms and length of Russell’s contract with the Shanghai club were not disclosed in the initial league statement.
