Michael Eneramo: Former Nigeria Striker Dies at 40 During Match Former Nigeria international striker Michael Eneramo has died after collapsing during a friendly match in Kaduna on Friday, April 24, 2026, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed. The 40-year-old slumped on the pitch five minutes into the second half and was pronounced dead at a local hospital despite resuscitation efforts. Eneramo earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles between 2009 and 2010, scoring his first international goal in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in May 2009. One of the highlights of his international career came during 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, when he scored in Nigeria’s 2–2 home draw against Tunisia — a result that proved crucial in securing the team’s place at the tournament in South Africa. Though not selected for the final World Cup squad, Eneramo was widely respected for his strength, work rate, and goalscoring ability. During his club career, he played for teams across North Africa and the Middle East, including Espérance Sportive de Tunis in Tunisia, where fans nicknamed him “Al Dababa” (The Tank) for his physical presence and attacking prowess. He also had spells in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, including a stint with Beşiktaş. Born in Nigeria, Eneramo reportedly turned down approaches to represent Tunisia internationally before committing to the Super Eagles. After retiring from professional football, he remained involved in the sport by running a football academy in Kaduna. The NFF described his passing as “devastating,” with General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi stating: “He was a symbol of strength, determination and resolve, and created unforgettable moments.” The federation added that it would pray for eternal rest for Eneramo and fortitude for his family and the Nigerian football community. Tributes poured in from across the football world, including from the official Super Eagles social media account, which posted a picture of the striker with the caption: “Rest in peace Michael.” Former teammates and fans remembered him as a dedicated professional and a beloved figure in Nigerian football.
