Fossilized eggshells discovered in Argentina reveal that massive titanosaurs incubated their volleyball-sized eggs by burying them in rotting vegetation rather than sitting on them, according to a study published in Royal Society Open Science. Researchers found that the gargantuan, long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs were simply too large to brood their clutches directly without crushing them.
How Titanosaurs Incubated Their Eggs
Titanosaurs weighed up to 75 tonnes, roughly half the mass of a blue whale, making traditional brooding impossible. According to University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky, an adult titanosaur trying to sit on a nest would have turned it into “one big omelette.” Instead, microscopic analysis of eggshell pores conducted by the research team—led by University of Tsukuba paleontologist Kohei Tanaka alongside collaborators in Japan and Argentina—indicates the dinosaurs relied on decomposing plant matter. Microbes generating heat as they broke down vegetation provided the necessary warmth to keep embryos developing, a technique mirrored by modern crocodiles and megapode birds.
The Chorrillo Formation Discovery
The fossil fragments of Fusioolithus eggs were unearthed in the Chorrillo Formation at the southern tip of Argentina, spanning finds from 2020 and 2024. Dating back to the Late Cretaceous period between 72 million and 66 million years ago just before dinosaur extinction, the site offered a surprisingly cool climate compared to equatorial regions where titanosaur eggs were previously found by the dozen. According to Zelenitsky, the prehistoric location featured a latitude comparable to Red Deer, Alberta, with a climate similar to modern-day New York City.
Ancient Ecosystem of Southern Argentina
Fossils recovered from the Chorrillo Formation outline a lush coastal plain ecosystem where titanosaurs coexisted with diverse regional wildlife. Researchers identified remains of the 25-meter-long titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris, alongside the smaller two-legged herbivore Isasicursor santacrucensis, tyrannosaur-like megaraptors, and small birds. The environment also supported crocodiles, snakes, turtles, frogs, fish, mammals, snails, and insects. Zelenitsky noted that reproducing in such cool climates posed a challenge for massive animals requiring substantial resources to survive and hatch embryos over several months.
