Rescue Operation in Jotunheimen National Park: Four hospitalized with Suspected Hypothermia
Lom, Norway – A large-scale rescue operation was launched late Tuesday evening in the Jotunheimen National Park after a satellite-based emergency signal alerted authorities to a distressed tour group. The incident,which occurred in the Rauddalen valley bordering Vestland and Lom municipality in Innlandet county,involved a group of fifteen individuals experiencing the effects of extreme cold,with four requiring immediate hospitalization.
According to a report from the Innlandet police district, the initial alert came at approximately 10:04 PM local time, indicating that several members of the tour group were chilled and unconscious. The mountainous terrain of Rauddalen,with peaks exceeding 2,100 meters in elevation,presented meaningful challenges for the rescue effort.
Operations Manager haagen Løvseth confirmed the deployment of extensive resources, including local ground teams and a coordinated response from five helicopters representing health services, the police, and the Norwegian rescue service.By 10:24 PM, air ambulance and rescue helicopters had arrived on the scene.
Four individuals were subsequently airlifted to Førde Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for suspected hypothermia. Authorities confirmed that all four were conscious at the time of transport. The remaining eleven members of the tour group did not require hospitalization or evacuation, receiving on-site assistance from the rescue teams.
The Jotunheimen National Park is known for its challenging weather conditions, even during periods outside of peak winter. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and appropriate equipment when venturing into remote mountainous regions.
