Canada and France Strengthen Coordination Amidst Middle East Tensions

Ottawa and Paris are bolstering diplomatic ties and coordinating responses to the escalating situation in the Middle East, with a particular focus on protecting their citizens in the region and addressing the unique challenges facing Lebanon. Discussions also centered on priorities for the upcoming G7 summit under the French presidency.

Diplomatic Discussions and Regional Concerns

On March 6, 2026, Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, held a conversation with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand to assess the growing instability in the Middle East. A key outcome of the discussion was a commitment to continued close collaboration to ensure the safety and security of their respective nationals present in the region French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Barrot specifically highlighted the precarious situation in Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of protecting infrastructure and civilians, and upholding Lebanon’s territorial integrity. This concern follows a recent Israeli strike that damaged a building in Beirut on September 30, 2024 RFI.

G7 Collaboration and Previous Meetings

The ministers also discussed the priorities of the G7 under France’s 2026 presidency. This follows a previous meeting between Anand and Barrot on November 11-12, 2025, on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in the Niagara Region, Ontario Global Affairs Canada.

France’s Focus on Lebanon’s Future

France continues to closely monitor the situation in Lebanon, with Minister Barrot recently undertaking a regional tour including Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. Discussions have focused on critical issues such as disarming Hezbollah, providing support for the Lebanese army, and countering jihadist activities L’Orient-Le Jour.

According to an interview with L’Orient-Le Jour on February 5, 2026, Barrot stated that Lebanon is at a pivotal moment, and that the Lebanese government has completed the first phase of disarmament south of the Litani River L’Orient-Le Jour.
