France Limits US Ambassador Kushner’s Access After Diplomatic Snub

Paris – France has moved to restrict US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner’s access to government ministers following a diplomatic dispute stemming from comments made by the US embassy regarding the death of a French far-right activist and Kushner’s subsequent failure to attend a scheduled meeting with the French Foreign Minister.

Embassy Comments Spark Outrage

The controversy began when the US embassy in Paris posted on social media regarding the murder of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-classic student who died after being attacked in Lyon on February 14th. The embassy warned that “violent left-wing extremism is on the rise” in France, framing the incident as a security threat.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot strongly condemned the embassy’s comments, stating that France rejects any attempt to exploit the tragedy for political purposes.

Kushner Fails to Meet with French Minister

Barrot summoned Kushner for a meeting on Monday evening to discuss the embassy’s statements. Though, Kushner did not attend, citing prior commitments and sending a senior embassy official in his place. This prompted a strong response from the French Foreign Ministry.

The ministry accused Kushner of an “apparent failure to grasp the basic requirements of the ambassadorial mission” and requested that he “no longer be allowed direct access” to French government ministers. While direct access has been curtailed, Kushner is still permitted to continue his diplomatic duties and engage in “exchanges” with State Department officials.

Previous Diplomatic Friction

This is not the first instance of tension between Kushner and the French government. In August, Kushner missed a ministry meeting after sending an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron criticizing the government’s response to rising antisemitism in France.

Background on Charles Kushner

Charles Kushner is a real estate mogul and billionaire whose son, Jared Kushner, is married to Ivanka Trump. He was sentenced to two years in prison in 2005 for tax evasion and other offenses, but was later pardoned by President Trump in 2020.

Ongoing Investigation

Six individuals have been charged with murder in connection with the death of Quentin Deranque. The incident continues to be a sensitive issue in French politics.
