Tennessee Expands Free 8-Month Small Business Coaching Program for Entrepreneurs

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) has announced the expansion of its free 8-month small business coaching program to additional regions across the state, according to a press release dated April 5, 2024. The initiative, funded by a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), aims to support 500+ local entrepreneurs through personalized mentorship, workshops, and access to capital resources.

What Is the Program Offering?

The program provides participating businesses with one-on-one coaching from certified advisors, monthly group training sessions, and guidance on securing loans or grants. Topics covered include financial planning, market analysis, and digital transformation strategies. “Entrepreneurs gain actionable tools to scale operations while navigating regulatory requirements,” said TSBDC Director Laura Martinez in the press release.

How Is the Expansion Being Funded?

The SBA’s $2.1 million grant, allocated under its 2023 Small Business Assistance Program, will cover program costs, including hiring additional coaches and developing online training modules. The TSBDC also partnered with the Tennessee Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) to match funds for regional outreach efforts, according to a joint statement from both organizations.

How Is the Expansion Being Funded?

Why Does This Matter for Tennessee’s Economy?

Small businesses contribute over 43% of Tennessee’s private-sector employment, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 Economic Census. The expansion follows a pilot program in 2023 that helped 120 startups secure $15 million in funding. “This initiative addresses a critical gap in support for early-stage ventures,” said TEDC CEO James Carter. “It’s a direct investment in job creation and economic resilience.”

Who Is Eligible?

Businesses with fewer than 50 employees and annual revenues under $2 million are eligible, provided they are headquartered in Tennessee. Applications open on May 1, 2024, through the TSBDC website. Participants must commit to 12 hours of coaching sessions and attend all workshops, as outlined in the program’s terms.

What’s Next for the Program?

The TSBDC plans to evaluate the program’s impact by December 2024, with results shared in a public report. If successful, the model could be replicated in other states, according to SBA regional director Maria Gonzalez. “This is a blueprint for scalable, localized support,” she said in a separate statement.
