It’s getting harder to live in freedom, and it shouldn’t have to be. Right now, around the world, Big Tech monopolies are attempting to normalize signing your digital autonomy away – not only for convenience, but for basic needs. So-called artificial intelligence has only accelerated this trend. It’s not just our basic computations that are being sent off to the “cloud,” but more and more aspects of our daily lives, whether we want it or not. It’s now commonplace to offload our thoughts to a GPU farm before we’re able to take that first step in cooking a meal, studying for a test, or even sending an email. Things don’t have to be this way.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) was founded forty years ago in an effort to support GNU, the first operating system and first project to recognise why nonfree software is perilous and do somthing about it. We’ve come a long way as the beginning, but the core principles remain the same: users deserve control over their technology.

What is Free Software? It’s Not About Price.

The term “free” in “free software” refers to freedom, not price. Free software guarantees four essential freedoms:

• The freedom to run the program as you wish,for any purpose. You aren’t restricted in how you use the software.
• The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish. Access to the source code is crucial for this.
• The freedom to redistribute copies so you can definitely help others. Sharing knowledge and tools is essential for a free society.
• The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. This allows the community to improve and adapt the software.

Without these freedoms, software becomes a tool for control, rather than empowerment. Proprietary software, by it’s very nature, restricts these freedoms.

Why Does Digital Freedom Matter?

Relying on proprietary software creates several risks:

• Loss of Control: You are at the mercy of the software vendor. They can change the software, discontinue support, or even introduce backdoors without your consent.
• Privacy Concerns: Proprietary software frequently enough collects data about your usage, which can be used for tracking or surveillance.
• Security Vulnerabilities: Without access to the source code, it’s difficult to identify and fix security flaws.
• Vendor Lock-in: Switching to a different software solution can be difficult and expensive.

The rise of AI amplifies these risks. Many AI services require sending your data to remote servers for processing. This means you are relinquishing control over your data and trusting a third party with your privacy. Free software offers an choice: the ability to run AI models locally, on your own hardware, preserving your privacy and autonomy.
