From Juvenile Delinquency to Entertainment: The Multifaceted Career of Kazuo Takeda

Kazuo Takeda, a graduate of Osaka University of Physical Education, embarked on an unconventional career path, transitioning from a law instructor working with juvenile delinquents to a key figure within Yoshimoto Kogyo Holdings Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s most influential entertainment conglomerates. His journey reflects a commitment to rehabilitation, education, and fostering creativity within the entertainment industry.

Early Life and Athletic Pursuits

Born in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Takeda’s initial exposure to sports came through judo in elementary school. He later participated in baseball and soft tennis, the latter becoming a significant focus during his high school years at Osaka Prefectural Senboku High School. Inspired by the popular anime “Aim for the Ace!”, he joined the soft tennis club, achieving a third-place ranking in Osaka Prefecture as a team member.

Initially intending to pursue a career in tax administration, Takeda heeded his father’s advice and opted to attend university to continue playing soft tennis. However, he quickly realized the high level of competition at the university level.

Three Decades in Juvenile Justice

Takeda’s career began not in entertainment, but in law enforcement. After failing to pass the Sakai City employment exam, he secured a position at the Osaka Juvenile Classification Center through a recommendation from his university’s career support staff. For approximately 30 years, he served as a legal instructor at various juvenile training schools across Japan, including Izumi Gakuen (Osaka), Kakogawa Gakuen (Hyogo), Naniwa Juvenile Training School (Osaka), Miho Gakuen (Tottori), and Okayama Juvenile Training School. He rose to the position of chief specialist in charge of the treatment department.

His role involved providing comprehensive support to young offenders, including daily life guidance, academic and vocational education, physical and emotional development, and plans for rehabilitation. He often worked directly with particularly challenging cases, providing counseling and addressing the concerns of troubled youth.

A Connection with Yoshimoto Kogyo

Takeda’s path crossed with Yoshimoto Kogyo while stationed at Naniwa Juvenile Training School. Recognizing the communication challenges faced by the residents, the school sought assistance from a comedian to improve their interpersonal skills. Takeda approached Hiroshi Osaki, president (former chairman) of Yoshimoto Kogyo HD, a fellow alumnus of Senboku High School, who readily agreed to send comedian Kausu Nakata. Nakata’s performance captivated the residents, leading to further collaborations between the school and Yoshimoto Kogyo.

Transition to the Entertainment Industry

In 2015, at the age of 54, Takeda retired from his position as a legal instructor. He approached Osaki with the intention of transitioning to Yoshimoto Kogyo. Osaki proposed a new challenge: leading the establishment of a vocational school in Okinawa. Takeda accepted, marking a significant shift in his career.

Leading Yoshimoto Okinawa

The Okinawa Laugh & Peace Vocational School opened in Naha City in 2018, with Takeda serving as its inaugural principal. This marked the first time Yoshimoto Kogyo operated a vocational school accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, aiming to cultivate professionals in the entertainment industry, including creators, performers, and CG graphics specialists. Takeda highlighted Okinawa’s strategic location as a hub connecting Japan with other Asian countries and its rich performing arts culture as key factors in choosing the location.

Currently, Takeda serves as the Kyushu/Okinawa Area Executive Producer for Yoshimoto Sales Promotion & Area Action Co., Ltd., overseeing a range of promotional activities, including the Okinawa International Film Festival (until 2024) and collaborations with local businesses and hotels. Yoshimoto Kogyo Holdings Co., Ltd. was founded in 1912 and has grown into a major Japanese entertainment conglomerate.

Advice to Future Generations

Takeda encourages his former students at Osaka University of Physical Education to embrace continuous growth and envision their future selves. He emphasizes that individuals are not “finished products” and should strive to develop their potential over time, particularly during their formative years. He advises them to “struggle” and work hard until they are 35, rather than settling for the present.
