From Physics to Securing the Internet: The Story of FreeRADIUS Founder Alan DeKok

Alan DeKok’s career path is a testament to the power of adaptability and embracing unexpected opportunities. From a childhood on a strawberry and raspberry farm to a deep dive into nuclear physics, and ultimately to becoming a pivotal figure in internet security, DeKok’s journey is anything but conventional.

From Farming to Physics and Beyond

Growing up outside of Ottawa, DeKok quickly realized that agricultural life wasn’t for him. He preferred tinkering with 8-bit computers, a passion that led him to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in physics at Carleton University. He was drawn to physics because of its blend of mathematics and practical application. During his Master’s program, he contributed to a highly specialized project at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, working in a clean-room facility two kilometers underground to manage a water-purification system achieving an astonishing one atom of impurity per cubic meter.

Despite finding nuclear physics intellectually stimulating, DeKok didn’t envision it as a lifelong pursuit. He recognized his skills in computing, honed through programming during his education, and decided to explore opportunities in the tech industry. “I was out of physics. That was it,” he stated.

The Value of a Physics Background

DeKok believes his physics background provided him with valuable skills applicable to his later career. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the “big picture,” a skill crucial for explaining complex protocols to standards bodies. He also highlights the value of learning “methods are more important than knowledge,” a principle that allowed him to quickly grasp recent concepts in the industry.

Founding FreeRADIUS

In 1996, DeKok began his career as a software developer at Gandalf, a company focused on ISDN technology. After Gandalf’s closure, he joined CryptoCard, where he began working with RADIUS servers. RADIUS acts as a gatekeeper, verifying user identities and controlling network access.

In 1999, DeKok started the FreeRADIUS project in his spare time, recognizing a gap in the market for actively developed open-source RADIUS servers. The project “gradually took over my life,” he says, evolving from a hobby into a full-time endeavor. He founded InkBridge Networks (formerly NetworkRADIUS) in 2008.

FreeRADIUS: Securing a Significant Portion of the Internet

Today, FreeRADIUS is used by an estimated 100 million people daily, and DeKok estimates that at least half of the world’s internet users are authenticated through his software. It’s a critical component for major internet service providers, global financial institutions, and Wi-Fi services like Eduroam. The open-source nature of FreeRADIUS has been key to its success, allowing it to compete with larger companies.

DeKok likens RADIUS to a building foundation: essential but often unseen. He continues to maintain and improve FreeRADIUS, focusing on incremental fixes and adapting to evolving network technologies.

A Legacy of Tiny Fixes and Lasting Impact

DeKok emphasizes the importance of consistent, incremental improvements, describing it as a “ratchet effect of tiny little fixes that add up over time.” He remains confident in the future of RADIUS, stating, “It’s never going to go away,” given the billions of dollars of equipment that rely on it.

Looking ahead, DeKok plans to continue working on FreeRADIUS, exploring new markets and products. He never anticipated the scale of his impact, but his journey demonstrates how preparation, openness to opportunity, and a willingness to capitalize on luck can lead to a remarkable career.
