Google’s Fuchsia UI, “Armadillo,” Reborn as a Web App
Google’s once-shelved operating system project, Fuchsia, is experiencing a resurgence of interest thanks to a web app recreating its early user interface, known as “Armadillo.” While Fuchsia hasn’t become the Android or Chrome OS replacement initially envisioned, its innovative UI concepts are living on through the efforts of developers.
A Decade of Fuchsia: From OS Project to Smart Display Backbone
Development of Fuchsia began around 2016, representing Google’s exploration of a recent operating system kernel, Zircon, designed for scalability and performance [1]. In 2017, an early concept for a user interface, “Armadillo,” emerged, featuring a unique design with a bottom quick settings hub and recent apps displayed in reverse chronological order. This UI was publicized by Kyle Bradshaw of 9to5Google, who closely followed Fuchsia’s development for years.
However, Google ultimately shifted direction, and the “Armadillo” UI was largely abandoned. Fuchsia found its first practical application as the operating system powering Nest Hub smart displays starting in 2021 [1].
Reviving Armadillo: A Web App Throwback
Now, a former Google employee, James O’Leary (a lead in Material You), has brought “Armadillo” back to life in the form of a web app. Utilizing open-source code and AI assistance, O’Leary recreated the UI, hosting it on GitHub [1]. Users can interact with the bottom hub and recent apps menu, offering a glimpse into Google’s past UI explorations.
A Buggy But Nostalgic Experience
While the web app successfully revives the look and feel of the original “Armadillo” UI, it’s not without its limitations. The app is reported to be buggy, particularly on mobile devices, where the UI is less polished compared to the desktop version [1]. Despite these imperfections, the project serves as a fascinating “what might have been” moment in Google’s history.
Fuchsia’s Continued Evolution
Although not a direct competitor to Android or Chrome OS yet, Fuchsia continues to evolve. Its card-based interface, prioritizing tasks over individual apps, represents a different approach to user experience [2]. The OS’s technical architecture, built around the Zircon kernel, Escher for graphics, and Flutter for cross-platform development, positions it for potential future expansion across various devices [2].
