Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died on February 28, triggering a weeklong period of state-organized mourning across Iran and Iraq. Amid an ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, the regime has launched a series of funeral rituals that will conclude with a burial in Mashhad.
A Multi-City Procession Across Shiite Strongholds
The state has mapped out a journey designed to pull massive crowds of supporters into the streets. According to Iranian state media, the procession will touch down in at least five cities:
- Tehran: The capital hosts the initial lying-in-state at the Grand Mosalla. Authorities have declared a public holiday to clear the way for Monday’s primary funeral procession.
- Qom: On Tuesday, the procession shifts 100 miles south for a mass prayer event at the Jamkaran Mosque, a site of deep religious significance.
- Karbala and Najaf: On Wednesday, the procession crosses into Iraq. While Ayatollah Khamenei held deep ties to regional Shiite militant groups, he was not the primary clerical authority in Iraq; that position is held by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, according to regional religious scholars.
- Mashhad: The journey ends Thursday in the birthplace of the late leader. Burial will take place at the shrine of Imam Reza, the same site where former Iranian President Ebrahimi Raisi was interred following his 2024 helicopter crash.
Logistical Strains During Regional Conflict
The government is balancing these events against the pressures of an active conflict and extreme summer temperatures. The scale of the operation is immense. In Qom alone, officials have secured 20 million bottles of water and 1.5 million sandwiches for the crowds. In Tehran, authorities are pushing mourners to leave cars on the city’s outskirts, asking them to proceed by public transport to prevent total gridlock.
The Uncertainty of Succession
Succession remains a volatile question, centered on the status of Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son. His participation in the funeral is currently uncertain. Reports indicate he sustained injuries in an airstrike around the same time his father was killed and has not made a public appearance since that event.

Under Iran’s theocratic structure, the leader held authority over all branches of government and served as the nation’s highest cleric.
