Hello, this is Channu (wife).
This is the third story about a trip to England with the theme of pilgrimage to sacred places.
This time, I will be talking about my favorite manga, “The Funeral Procession of the Rose King,” where I went on a pilgrimage to York, a fortified city in northern England.
Richard III, the main character in “Funeral of the Rose King,” is from the York family, and the city of York is his home base.

walled city york

York has a long history, dating back to ancient Roman times. It was then occupied by the Vikings in the 9th century and flourished through trade. (Richard III was from the 15th century)

…I’ll say it first, but it was really good. yoke.
Regardless of promotion. (←I feel like I say that all the time…I love traveling after all…)
It’s quieter than London, has more history, better scenery, and has quite a few sightseeing spots. If I go to England, I want to go to cities other than London! Recommended for those who.

It takes about 2 hours by train from London to York.
The city of York is surrounded by a 5km wall (you can even walk on top of it).
Arrive at the station and take a stroll along the city walls of York.

There are emblems like this in various places.
The white rose, the symbol of the York family, is used…hot.

This gate also appears in the funeral procession of the Rose King!
I think it’s cool, and I’m filled with emotion as I remember the scenes from the movie.
You can also climb up from the stairs on the side.

The town has a calm and elegant atmosphere
The brick buildings lined up along the river look nice.

clifford tower

Apparently there are ruins that have been there since the 11th century, so I decided to go there.

It is built on a hill. When viewed from directly above, it looks like a four-leaf clover.
(I took this photo when I was passing by again in the evening, so the background is clear unlike the other photos)

This is what it looks like inside
I wonder if Richard III spent some time here too?

Entry fee is £10 per person. It’s an old building, so the architecture is beautiful! It didn’t feel that way, but there were various explanations and it seemed like a good place to study history. (I don’t have any English skills, so just looking at it from the outside might have been enough…)

Next, head to York Minster.
It is one of the most famous and historic churches in England.

In addition to being large, each window is extremely detailed.
I can’t believe it was made hundreds of years ago.

I also pre-registered for a tour to climb York Minster’s Central Tower.
We gathered at the meeting point and climbed the 275 steps in single file.

The souvenir corner is also well-stocked, and there are many goods with white rose motifs, so if you’re a Rose King fan, this is a must-see. (By the way, I also went to Leicester, the sacred place of Richard III, but I couldn’t find any white rose goods there.)

Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms York

I looked into the shops in York and found out that I definitely want to go there! A long-established tea and sweets shop.
The store is only in York. Now that I’m out of London, I want to buy some souvenirs that can only be bought here…! That’s why.
The cafe seems to be popular, but this time I was traveling to save money on food, so I only bought a souvenir tea and some take-out baked goods.

I bought a small tart and had a small lunch.
It was rich and delicious.

I also bought tea bags for home use. It has a rich aroma and is delicious not only when brewed first but even when brewed second. (It has more tea leaves than the tea bags you buy in Japan, so it feels stronger.)

Shambles Street, etc.

If you come all the way, you should also visit Shambles Street. This shopping street was the model for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley.

“The Store That Must Not Be Named”

I found this shop a little further away.
The shop’s mark is the white boar that was depicted on Richard III’s banner…? No, it’s just a pig…?

It seems that you can eat a famous dish called Yorkshire pudding.

On the banks of the river Ouse

This time, I stayed in York for about 8 hours. (The train fare from London varies depending on the time of day, so this is what happened as a result of choosing the cheapest time of day)
The sightseeing spots are tightly packed together, so I get the impression that 4 hours is enough for York Minster, Shambles Street, and a light walk around town. We spent the remaining time leisurely walking around and watching the sunset from a bench by the river. Personally, I made the right decision to stay longer because the city as a whole had a nice atmosphere and I felt comfortable spending time there, and that alone gave me good memories.

As a fan of the Rose King’s Funeral Procession, I was very happy to see evidence of the history of the York family, including the white rose coat of arms, all over the place…

It was the same in London, but I felt a sense of local love or pride when I saw the city’s coat of arms displayed everywhere. I can’t explain it well, but I felt that nobility was one of the characteristics of England.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading.
