Self-Cleaning Glass Targets Solar Efficiency Loss
Italian manufacturer FuturaSun is taking aim at the perennial problem of panel grime with its new Silk® Nova Pure module series. The panels feature integrated True Rays® technology, a permanent surface treatment developed alongside Irish firm Kastus to combat dirt accumulation. Unlike temporary coatings, this glass-integrated modification is baked in during manufacturing to maintain efficiency throughout the system’s operational lifespan.

Dual-Action Surface Chemistry
The True Rays® process relies on two distinct chemical functions to keep panels clear. First, the surface exhibits hydrophilic properties, forcing rainwater to spread into a uniform sheet rather than beading into droplets. This creates a natural rinsing effect that carries away dust and atmospheric particles.
Second, the glass utilizes photocatalytic action. When exposed to sunlight, the surface triggers a reaction that breaks down organic residues—such as bird droppings, biofilm, and moss—before they can bond to the glass. By mitigating this “soiling,” the modules maintain higher light transmission and more stable energy yields.
Prioritizing Lifecycle Yield Over Nominal Power
For solar operators, dirt is more than an eyesore; it is a direct hit to the bottom line. Reducing the need for manual cleaning lowers operational expenses and boosts the long-term return on investment for both residential and utility-scale projects.
Gianluca Coletti, CTO of the FuturaSun Group, stated that the company focused on increasing the actual energy yield of the modules over their entire lifecycle rather than just improving nominal power ratings. The technology was previously validated in high-standard applications, including the automotive sector, before being adapted for the solar industry.
Broad Market Deployment
FuturaSun is targeting three primary sectors with the new series. For residential users, the panels eliminate the need for dangerous roof maintenance. For commercial and industrial clients, the tech offers a way to curb rapidly accumulating cleaning costs on large rooftops. In the utility-scale sector, where efficiency is measured in fractions of a percentage, the tech promises significant financial gains over a project’s lifetime.
This partnership with Kastus marks a strategic push to move advanced surface treatments into standard PV manufacturing. The Silk® Nova Pure series is now hitting the market as FuturaSun shifts its focus toward guaranteeing real-world performance under operational conditions.
