Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen Canceled, Rescheduled for Courchevel

The men’s Super-G World Cup race scheduled for Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, has been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Dense fog and deteriorating piste conditions prompted race officials to postpone and ultimately cancel the event, prioritizing athlete safety.

Weather Conditions Force Cancellation

Persistent fog and light drizzle on the Kandahar slope created significant visibility issues throughout the morning, preventing a fair and safe competition. Despite efforts to assess conditions and potentially lower the start, the weather did not improve sufficiently.

“We have tried everything, the weather forecast was unfortunately correct. It rained in the morning, then the fog came. We had already moved the start down, but the fog came further down. You couldn’t spot a gate, there was no chance of a race. It would have been too dangerous,” stated FIS Race Director Markus Waldner in an interview with ORF.

Race Rescheduled for Courchevel

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has announced that the canceled Super-G will be rescheduled and held in Courchevel, France, on March 13th. This will be part of the final speed races before the World Cup finals in Kvitfjell.

According to FIS men’s race director Markus Waldner, Courchevel will host both Super-G and downhill races during this period. Source

Recent Results and Standings

Saturday’s downhill race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was won by Swiss skier Marco Odermatt, followed by fellow countrymen Alexis Monney and Stefan Rogentin. Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr finished fourth.

Next Steps in the World Cup Circuit

The men’s World Cup circuit will now move to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for technical events. A giant slalom is scheduled for Saturday, and a slalom will seize place on Sunday. Both races will be broadcast live on ORF1 and ORF ON, starting at 9:30 AM. Source
