Gable Steveson Eyes UFC Debut After Impressive MMA Start

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson is rapidly progressing in mixed martial arts (MMA) and is on the cusp of a potential UFC contract. The 25-year-old wrestler, who transitioned to MMA after a decorated wrestling career and a stint in WWE, believes he is already capable of competing with top UFC heavyweights.

Steveson’s Journey to MMA

Steveson debuted in MMA in September 2023 and has quickly established himself as a prospect to watch. He currently holds a 2-0 professional MMA record, with both victories coming by knockout in a combined time of just over two minutes. His most recent fight is scheduled for Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Mexico Fight League 3 in Monterrey, Mexico, against veteran Hugo Lezama.

Confidence in Facing Top Heavyweights

Despite his limited experience, Steveson has expressed confidence in his ability to compete with some of the UFC’s elite heavyweights. He specifically mentioned Tom Aspinall, Ciryl Gane, and Alex Pereira as opponents he believes he could challenge, particularly given his youth and potential for further development. “Those three sizeable names — Pereira, Aspinall, Gane — I can compete with most definitely,” Steveson stated on Submission Radio. “Especially right now.”

Jon Jones’s Endorsement

Steveson’s potential has also been recognized by former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who mentors the young fighter. UFC color commentator Joe Rogan also believes Steveson would already be a problem for some top 10 heavyweights.

Weight Class and UFC Opportunity

Steveson recently weighed in at a career-low 249 pounds for his bout against Hugo Lezama. The heavyweight division in the UFC is currently considered relatively weak, with a gap in skill between the top contenders and the rest of the roster. This presents an opportunity for Steveson to quickly make an impact if he joins the promotion.

What’s Next for Steveson?

A victory over Hugo Lezama at Mexico Fight League 3 could be the final step Steveson needs to secure a UFC contract. He has expressed a desire to make his UFC debut at a future event in Washington, D.C., tying his next step directly to the promotion’s return to the city. UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard has already shown interest, attending Steveson’s previous fight and engaging in discussions about his potential path to the UFC.
