TikTok Star Shares Journey Caring for Mother with Dementia
A Galway woman is captivating thousands on TikTok with her honest and heartwarming portrayal of life as a full-time caregiver for her 96-year-old mother, Isabella, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2025. Susan Burke, from Gort, shares videos, advice, and experiences on her account, offering a glimpse into the challenges and joys of caring for a loved one with this condition.
The Diagnosis and Early Signs
Susan noticed early symptoms of dementia when Isabella began experiencing confusion during everyday activities. “We were just as usual, nice and relaxed,” Susan explained, “we’d been chatting fine and then she just turned to me and said, ‘where’s Susan?’” This moment of disorientation, where Isabella didn’t recognize her own daughter, was a pivotal point. Susan initially tried to dismiss these instances, attributing them to old age, but the frequency of these episodes increased.
Navigating the Challenges of Dementia
The year 2025 proved particularly tricky as Isabella’s condition progressed. Susan described a period where her mother “just wasn’t mum,” and her behavior changed significantly. Isabella was referred to St. Brendan’s ICPOP programme in Loughrea in December 2025, where she received a diagnosis of vascular dementia.
Creating a Supportive Environment
Drawing on her experience as a childcare worker, Susan created a stimulating environment for her mother at home. She established a “Montessori room” filled with paints, building blocks, jigsaw puzzles, and coloring books designed to engage Isabella’s memory and cognitive function. Susan also implemented visual aids, such as a name badge for herself and a message board stating, “Susan and Bella are here today. We are the only people in the house. We are safe,” to address Isabella’s repetitive questioning and feelings of disorientation.
Understanding Sundowning
Susan also learned about “sundowning,” a common phenomenon in dementia where symptoms of confusion and agitation worsen in the late afternoon or evening. She discovered that sitting with her mother, holding her hand, and reassuring her of her safety could help calm her during these episodes. The change of scenery when they moved to Galway from Dublin also contributed to periods of confusion, with Isabella sometimes believing they had purchased a second house.
The Impact of Latest Medication
Recently, Isabella started new medication that has significantly improved her sleep and overall well-being. Previously, she experienced frequent awakenings during the night, but the medication has allowed her to sleep through the night, providing much-needed rest for both of them. Susan uses a baby monitor to ensure her mother’s safety.
Sharing the Journey on TikTok
Susan began sharing her experiences on TikTok, gaining nearly 30,000 followers who are moved by her story. She explained that she felt stronger and more able to share advice and support after a particularly difficult year in 2025.
The Importance of Connection
Throughout the challenges, Susan emphasizes the deep bond she shares with her mother. “We were, and we still are, the best of pals,” she said. Susan, who never married, has always had a close relationship with her mother, and continues to prioritize their connection despite the difficulties of dementia.
