GameGPU: Microsoft Plans Project Helix Launch With Three Hardware Tiers

Take-Two Interactive and Microsoft Sign Open-Ended Distribution Agreement for Project Helix

Take-Two Interactive signed an updated distribution agreement with Microsoft on October 5, 2026, terminating all previous platform-specific contracts and establishing an open-ended framework for future Xbox releases. GameGPU reported that the new legally binding contract removes the device-by-device restrictions seen in the 2020 agreement, which explicitly referenced the Xbox One and Xbox Series X platforms. The updated structure allows the publisher to distribute products on any Xbox-branded system without negotiating separate contracts for each piece of hardware. This universal distribution model sets the legal foundation for the upcoming launch of Microsoft’s Project Helix hardware ecosystem.

Microsoft plans three Project Helix hardware tiers

Microsoft plans to release Project Helix as three distinct hardware tiers rather than a single console. The flagship desktop system, designated Project Helix X, targets 56 TFLOPS of graphics performance. The entry-level Project Helix S targets approximately 18 TFLOPS to maintain continuity with the current generation of hardware. The third configuration, Project Helix Handheld, is designed as a portable device operating at a thermal design power of approximately 10 TFLOPS to preserve battery life. Custom semiconductor chips built on AMD architecture have successfully passed the tape-out stage, locking in the silicon structure for mass production.

Semiconductor costs drive multi-tiered hardware approach

The multi-tiered hardware approach stems from severe pressures in the global semiconductor market. Manufacturers face component shortages alongside a more than 2.5-fold increase in RAM costs and rising prices for silicon wafers. Engineers implemented varying memory capacities across the Project Helix variants to maintain an affordable retail price for the entry-level and portable models. Meanwhile, competing hardware from Sony features a PlayStation 6 desktop graphics processor with a thermal design power of approximately 40 TFLOPS, alongside a separate next-generation portable solution currently in development in Japan.

Commercial Launch Schedule and Software Certification Terms

The completion of the semiconductor tape-out phase points toward a commercial launch in November 2027. This milestone guarantees the prompt delivery of engineering samples to game studios ahead of the release window. Under the terms of the Take-Two agreement, Microsoft retains responsibility for overseeing software build certifications, distributing digital sales revenue, and collecting royalties from physical media. These provisions guarantee the availability of Take-Two’s software catalog across all incoming hardware form factors while establishing a long-term revenue-sharing model for both companies.
