Uttar Pradesh Police Kill Wanted Gangster in Saharanpur Encounter

Uttar Pradesh police killed Lalan Singh, a fugitive implicated in multiple homicides, bank robberies, and attacks on law enforcement, during a confrontation in Saharanpur on Monday, officials confirmed.

Criminal Background and Encounter Details

Lalan Singh, also known as Lallan, was a key suspect in a string of violent crimes across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, according to the Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, Amitabh Yash. Singh, a native of Anandgolwa village in Bihar’s Samastipur district, was injured in an exchange of fire with police on the Sarsawa–Nakur road in Saharanpur on the night of Sunday, November 13, 2023. He was later pronounced dead at a Saharanpur hospital, police said.

Criminal Background and Encounter Details

During the encounter, one of Singh’s associates fled the scene, prompting an ongoing search for the individual, officials added. The police did not disclose the associate’s identity or details about recovered items from the location.

Previous Crimes and Rewards

Singh was linked to the 2022 shooting of a sub-inspector and the robbery of his service pistol in Varanasi, as well as a firing-cum-robbery case in Chandauli, according to police records. His gang, which included his brothers and other members, was accused of murdering seven people—among them two sub-inspectors, a bank cashier, and a security guard—alongside multiple bank dacoities and government firearm heists.

The Varanasi Police Commissioner had offered a ₹1 lakh reward for his arrest, while the Chandauli Superintendent of Police added ₹25,000, bringing the total bounty to ₹1.25 lakh, as reported by local authorities.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Senior police officials stated that further details about the encounter, including the identity of the fleeing associate and any recovered evidence, would be released in a subsequent press briefing. The police emphasized Singh’s status as one of the most wanted criminals in eastern Uttar Pradesh, highlighting his prolonged evasion of arrest.

A separate incident in Ayodhya on November 10, 2023, saw another criminal with a ₹1.9 lakh bounty killed in an encounter, according to police reports. Both cases underscore the ongoing efforts by Uttar Pradesh authorities to dismantle organized crime networks in the region.

Why This Matters

Singh’s elimination marks a significant development in Uttar Pradesh’s anti-crime operations, particularly in regions like Saharanpur and Varanasi, which have seen recurring violence linked to gang activity. His arrest or death could disrupt a network responsible for multiple high-profile crimes, though the fugitive associate’s continued escape poses a challenge to law enforcement.

Context and Precedents

This encounter follows a pattern of police actions targeting high-profile criminals in the state. In 2022, for instance, a similar operation led to the killing of another gang leader, Deepak Sahu, in Kanpur, with authorities citing his involvement in multiple murders and robberies. The current case highlights the persistence of such networks despite increased policing efforts.
