Paramount+ Orders New 2D-Animated ‘Garfield’ Series Starring Lamorne Morris
Paramount+ has greenlit a new original 2D-animated series based on Jim Davis’ iconic comic strip, Garfield, with Lamorne Morris set to voice the lasagna-loving feline. The announcement, made on March 6, 2026, signals a renewed focus on family-friendly content for the streaming platform.
Reviving a Classic
The series, produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios, will feature Garfield’s signature sarcasm and “lackadaisical” attitude, according to a press release. Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post) will serve as executive producers.
Lamorne Morris Takes on the Role
Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Lamorne Morris, known for his roles in New Girl and Fargo, will lend his voice to the character. Morris is similarly currently in production on Jumanji 4 and stars in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir. He co-hosts the podcasts “The Lamorning After” and “The Mess Around.”
Garfield’s Expanding Universe
The new series follows the 2024 release of The Garfield Movie, starring Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield, and 2021’s Garfield Originals. Despite a lukewarm box office performance of $257 million worldwide for The Garfield Movie, a sequel is already in development.
Paramount acquired the rights to Garfield from Paws Inc. In 2019, integrating the character into its product portfolio, including apparel, toys, publishing, and video games like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Kart Racers, where Frank Welker previously voiced the character.
Part of a Growing Slate
Garfield joins a growing lineup of children’s programming on Paramount+, including the recently greenlit The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! Starring The Pigeon. The development of the series took seven years, following the previous animated series, The Garfield Show, which ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network/Boomerang, ending in 2009.
With over 200 million daily comic readers and millions of social media followers, the Garfield brand maintains a significant global presence after 47 years.
