Gas Prices in Florida Face Uncertainty Amidst Middle East Instability
Gasoline prices in Florida experienced a slight increase last week and are projected to face uncertainty due to rising oil prices stemming from instability in the Middle East, a crucial region for global energy markets, according to AAA.
The price of a gallon of gasoline was $2.89 on Sunday, representing a one-cent increase from the previous week, two cents less than a month ago, and 20 cents less than during the same period in 2025, according to AAA- The Auto Club Group’s weekly report.
Oil Price Increases and Global Impact
The increase was not related to international events but rather reflected typical cyclical pricing trends observed globally. Yet, prices could shift this week as crude oil markets rose during overnight trading on Sunday.
U.S. Crude oil prices rose sharply overnight on Sunday, exceeding $71 per barrel. The last time oil closed at that high was in June 2025. AAA indicated that rising oil prices are largely due to growing instability in a region essential to global energy markets. While the U.S. Does not import oil from Iran, the country remains a significant producer, supplying nations like China, and India. Any potential disruption to Iranian oil infrastructure could influence global supply expectations.
The Strait of Hormuz and Potential Disruptions
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to open waters, remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. AAA cautioned that even the possibility of reduced traffic through the strait could have a domino effect far beyond the Middle East, impacting countries regardless of their reliance on the region’s oil.
Because oil is traded globally, a deficit in one region can affect prices worldwide.
“AAA does not predict gasoline prices, and it is still too early to understand how much of an impact rising oil prices will have at the pump,” stated Mark Jenkins, a spokesperson for AAA. “However, increases in crude oil costs typically translate to higher gasoline prices, so we will be closely monitoring the market in the coming days.”
Seasonal Factors Also at Play
AAA explained that even before recent geopolitical developments, gasoline prices were already following typical seasonal patterns. Refineries are beginning the transition to summer-blend gasoline, which includes more expensive additives to limit evaporation in warmer temperatures. Demand for gasoline also tends to increase as spring break travel intensifies.
