A 31-year-old woman from Gaston,North Carolina,is facing multiple charges following a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early this morning in the Rich Square area of hertford County. The incident resulted in the death of her passenger.
According to Sergeant Preston Dennis of the north Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash took place around 2:00 a.m. on Highway 305, near the Hertford County line. The passenger has been identified as 42-year-old Dexter Jermaine Jenkins of Ahoskie, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Trooper J. Chaborro charged Jalissa Latifah Eley with driving left of center, driving while her license was revoked, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, and possession of an open container. While Eley did not exhibit signs of alcohol impairment during field sobriety tests, the open container charge stems from the presence of an open container within the vehicle she owned.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Eley veered left of center while attempting to avoid an animal in the roadway. this maneuver caused the vehicle to enter a ditch, ultimately colliding with a Department of Transportation road sign. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
