Google Gemini Transforms Workspace: AI-Powered Tools for Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Google is significantly expanding the integration of its artificial intelligence, Gemini, across its core Workspace applications – Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. These updates introduce a suite of generative AI capabilities designed to streamline workflows, enhance creativity, and improve data analysis for users.

Gemini as a Co-Editor in Google Docs

Gemini is evolving from an assistant to a collaborative co-editor within Google Docs. Users can now leverage Gemini to generate complete drafts based on contextual information sourced from their files, emails, and web content. The AI can be prompted directly within the editing interface to create documents or refine existing text. Key features include:

  • Match Writing Style: Gemini can adapt its tone, vocabulary, and sentence structure to align with the style of an existing document.
  • Match Doc Format: Users can generate fresh documents that mirror the layout and formatting of reference documents.

These features aim to accelerate the process of moving from a blank document to a polished draft by intelligently utilizing information already available within the Google Workspace ecosystem.

Enhanced Capabilities in Sheets and Slides

Gemini’s role is also expanding within Google Sheets and Slides. In Sheets, the AI can now create and organize spreadsheets from simple prompts. Users can request Gemini to generate checklists, data trackers, or analysis tables based on information from their emails or files. The “Fill with Gemini” feature populates cells with generated text, summaries, or categorized data, and can access Google Search for additional information when needed.

For Slides, Gemini can now generate slides that maintain consistency with an existing presentation’s design and theme. Users can prompt Gemini to draft slides or adjust formatting to match the overall presentation style. Google is also developing a feature that will enable the creation of entire presentations from a single prompt.

AI-Powered Search and Analysis in Google Drive

Google Drive is gaining new AI capabilities with the introduction of “Ask Gemini.” This feature allows users to query files using natural language. Gemini can summarize relevant information from documents and provide an AI-generated overview at the top of search results, enabling users to quickly grasp key information without opening individual files. Users can also pose questions that span across documents, emails, calendars, and web sources to receive comprehensive, AI-powered responses based on their stored data.

Google’s objective is to transform Drive from a simple file storage system into a dynamic environment where users can interact with their data more directly through the power of AI.

Availability

These new Gemini features began rolling out in beta on March 10, 2026, to subscribers of Google AI Ultra and Pro. Initial support is available in English globally for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and in the United States for Google Drive. Google announced the updates via its official blog and LinkedIn.
