Grammy Winner Samara Joy Brings Her Septet to Prague Sounds

Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy will perform at Prague’s Rudolfinum on November 20, 2026, headlining the Prague Sounds festival with her seven-piece ensemble. The 26-year-old New York singer, recognized by the Wall Street Journal as the first jazz vocal star of Generation Z, brings a program that spans classic standards and original vocalese arrangements.

Musical Roots in Bronx Gospel and Family Tradition

Seznam Zprávy reported that her musical upbringing contrasted sharply with her paternal grandparents’ strict religious household, where her father initially had to fight to perform secular bass and vocal music. Her grandparents operated a loudspeaker-equipped van known as the “Godmobile” through Philadelphia streets in the 1970s to preach and sing gospel. When Joy initially pursued jazz, her grandfather viewed it as sacrilege before coming to appreciate the emotional impact of her vocal work.

Rise to International Prominence and Television Breakthroughs

Joy won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019 while studying at a public liberal arts university. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she built an audience of more than 700,000 followers on TikTok by posting jazz standard performances sung in a mature contralto voice. Matt Pierson, a judge from her collegiate competition and collaborator with pianist Brad Mehldau, produced her first two albums of standards. These releases led to appearances on television talk shows hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. She won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, surpassing rock bands Måneskin and Wet Leg.

Expanding the Sound with a Seven-Piece Ensemble

For her upcoming Prague performance, Joy brings her largest touring lineup yet: a septet featuring a four-piece horn section established in 2023. The group includes saxophonists Kendrick McCallister and David Mason alongside trombonist Jason Charos, who write arrangements for the horns alongside the vocalist.

Her repertoire continually evolves, shifting away from familiar material to maintain spontaneity. She recently recorded a live album at the Los Angeles Blue Note club featuring Billy Strayhorn’s 1930s standard “Lush Life,” alongside “Round Midnight,” “Yesterdays,” and “No More Blues.”

Future Directions and Original Composition

While known primarily for interpreting established standards and writing her own vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos—such as Charles Mingus’s “The Reincarnation of a Lovebird”—Joy has begun writing original music.
