Geneticists have successfully engineered hypoallergenic beagles using CRISPR gene-editing technology, potentially offering a future path for millions of people who suffer from dog-related allergies. According to reports published in the CRISPR Journal on Wednesday, researchers at Kindred Companion Sciences produced two female beagle puppies, named Bailey and Alfie, whose hair and saliva lack the primary protein responsible for triggering human allergic reactions.

Matt Walker, a geneticist, spent his life avoiding dogs due to severe allergies before developing the animals with his team. According to AP News, Walker can now feed Bailey peanut butter while she rests on his lap and play fetch with her in Central Park. The genetic modification switched off the main gene responsible for producing the allergy-causing protein inside dog skin cells before the edited code was transferred into eggs and carried by a beagle surrogate. The puppies were born in September 2024.

How CRISPR Differs From Traditional Hypoallergenic Claims

Popular dog breeds often marketed as hypoallergenic—such as poodles and goldendoodles—frequently still produce allergy-causing proteins that accumulate in their dander, hair, and saliva, according to The Guardian. While these breeds may shed less fur, they can still provoke symptoms in sensitive individuals. By contrast, lab tests on Bailey and Alfie confirmed their fur and saliva contained no signs of the targeted protein. During skin-prick testing reported by AP News, Walker reacted to extracts from poodles and goldendoodles but showed no allergic reaction to samples taken from the gene-edited beagles.

Expert Perspectives and Commercialization Challenges

Independent medical and bioethical experts note that while the scientific achievement is significant, widespread consumer availability remains years away. Dr. Jeff SoRelle, a pathologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center who was not involved in the study, told AP News that researchers must test the animals on a broader portion of the human population. Because the switched-off gene represents the main culprit rather than every possible allergen, SoRelle noted that scientists do not yet know the exact breadth of its effectiveness across all human allergy sufferers.

Bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the New York University Grossman School of Medicine raised concerns with The Guardian regarding the societal impact of engineered pets. Caplan pointed out that while designer hypoallergenic animals could allow more people to own pets, commercial availability might discourage prospective owners from adopting stray or unwanted shelter animals that lack genetic modifications.

Future Outlook for Gene-Edited Pets

Kindred Companion Sciences intends to evaluate the technique on other dog breeds and service animals to determine whether allergy-free lines can be successfully established beyond beagles, according to AP News. Researchers previously utilized CRISPR technology two years ago to reduce allergy-causing proteins in a cat named Alsik, though the safety and viability of expanding that feline technique remain under evaluation. Bailey currently lives with Walker in New York, while her twin, Alfie, resides in Florida with a fellow Kindred scientist. Because the specific genetic edit occurs naturally in a small percentage of dogs, Walker stated that negative health effects are unlikely, though the animals continue to undergo routine veterinary monitoring.
