Genoa Celebrates Christopher Columbus Ceremony With Italian Officials
Genova celebrated Christopher Columbus with the traditional Columbian Ceremony, honoring the navigator and the city’s international ties, smart.comune.genova.it reported. The events opened at 15.15 at the Casa of Columbus with a wreath-laying ceremony and institutional speeches in the presence of historical groups from Genoa, in collaboration with A Compagna and the Consulate General of the United States in Genoa, before moving to Palazzo Ducale.
Tourism Minister Gianmarco Mazzi attended the proceedings alongside local leaders for the 52nd Columbian Conference, titled “I navigatori del futuro”. The day’s events focused heavily on the historical connection between Liguria and maritime exploration.
Mayor Silvia Salis Links Past Explorers to Modern Youth
“La Cerimonia Colombiana rinnova ogni anno il legame di Genova con la propria storia e con le tante persone che, partite dalla nostra terra, hanno continuato a custodirne il ricordo e le tradizioni,” Mayor Silvia Salis stated, as reported by smart.comune.genova.it.
Salis addressed local students during the ceremony by referencing a painting by Nicolò Barabino housed at Palazzo Orsini. The artwork depicts Columbus facing doubt while pursuing his goals.
“Oggi voglio rivolgere un messaggio soprattutto ai giovani, ricordando un dipinto di Nicolò Barabino, custodito a Palazzo Orsini, che raffigura Colombo deriso e incompreso mentre cerca di realizzare il suo sogno,” Salis added.
President Marco Bucci Emphasizes Transatlantic Heritage
“Cristoforo Colombo è una figura fondamentale della storia di Genova e del mondo, un grande navigatore che ha fatto quello che tanti genovesi e tanti liguri hanno fatto nella storia, ovvero andare oltre l’orizzonte,” Bucci said, according to smart.comune.genova.it. Bucci added that he personally contributed to the path of recognizing and valuing Columbus’s historical role and restoring statues dedicated to him in American cities since his time as mayor of Genoa.
Cultural Perspectives and Historical Complexity
“Oggi abbiamo una grande responsabilità: quella di immaginare un mondo in cui gli spostamenti delle persone non siano più motivo di conflitto, discriminazione ed esclusione,” Montanari stated, via smart.comune.genova.it. At the beginning of the twentieth century, millions of Italian emigrants who traveled to America contributed to the development of that country with their work while suffering profound discrimination.
Awards and International School Competitions
The ceremony featured several awards for academic achievement and civic contribution. Councillor Montanari honored students from class 5C of the Istituto Nautico San Giorgio, including Giulia Clemente, Stefano Paunete, Alice Cami, and Jacopo Ferrando.
The Centro Studi Colombiano presented its project titled “Immagini e immaginario su Cristoforo Colombo.” The Scuola d’Italia “G. Marconi” of New York placed first in the international school competition, while the I.C. “Littardi” of Imperia took second place.
