Two separate commercial vehicle crashes on Interstate 95 in McIntosh County left one person dead, another injured, and both directions of the highway closed for hours, according to WJCL. The initial collision near mile marker 47 involved a hazardous material spill, while a fatal secondary wreck occurred roughly five miles north early Monday morning.

Hazardous Material Spill Shuts Down Southbound Lanes

The first incident occurred at approximately 11:14 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 47, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Investigators determined that a southbound commercial vehicle failed to maintain its lane and struck the rear of another commercial vehicle parked on the right shoulder. The moving truck overturned onto its side, spilling corrosive hazardous material from its trailer.

Authorities closed all southbound lanes during the subsequent response and cleanup. Southbound traffic reopened around 8:15 a.m. Monday, while northbound lanes closed due to debris before reopening at approximately 6:26 a.m. The driver of the parked vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick hospital. State patrol officials did not release the injured driver’s condition. The agency’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement units responded to the scene.

Fatal Secondary Crash Near Mile Marker 52

As crews worked on the initial wreck, a second crash happened about five miles north. A state trooper traveling to assist with traffic control learned of the new wreck at approximately 6:09 a.m. Monday near mile marker 52.

Investigators stated that a sedan entered the right shoulder for an unknown reason and collided with the rear of a parked commercial vehicle’s trailer. The solo occupant and driver of the sedan died at the scene. Authorities withheld the driver’s name pending notification. The driver of the commercial vehicle escaped injury, though the far-right southbound lane remained restricted until approximately 9:37 a.m.

Traffic Diversions and Emergency Response

The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office, Glynn County Police Department, and local fire departments from both counties managed the scenes and redirected stranded motorists. Southbound drivers faced mandatory detours at Exit 49, while northbound traffic exited at Exit 42, creating extensive backups through the morning commute.
