Geraldine ‘Gerry’ MacKay, New Glasgow Nurse and Community Volunteer, Dies at 82
Geraldine Rae ‘Gerry’ MacKay of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, following a brief illness. She was 82 years old.
Early Life and Career
Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Gerry was the daughter of the late Raymond and Jean (Smith) Weldon. She pursued her passion for healthcare at the Aberdeen School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1964. Her nursing career included time at Moncton Hospital and a significant period at the Aberdeen Hospital, where she dedicated herself to the Maternity / Pediatric Ward.
Community Involvement and Hobbies
Gerry was a devoted member of her community and enjoyed a fulfilling life outside of her professional commitments. She cherished time spent at the family cottage at Lochaber Lake, creating lasting memories with her husband, Tom, and family. She was known for her creative talents, including painting, tole painting, and crafting, often using her sewing skills to help family members. Gerry’s baking was a beloved tradition, especially during the holidays.
Family and Legacy
Gerry is survived by her daughter, Patricia Crocket; son, Craig; grandchildren, Laura (Seth Burrill), Jamie, Jakob, and Josh; brother-in-law, Bobby (Wendy); one niece; one nephew; and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Tom, and her son-in-law, Jim.
Service Information
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. At the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, located at 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Rev. Charles McPherson will be officiating. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation. Burial will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Nova SPCA, the Lochaber Centre, or a charity of one’s choice. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital for their compassionate care during Gerry’s stay. R.H. Porter Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
