Deutsche Baseball Liga Introduces Interleague Round for 2026 Season

The Deutsche Baseball Liga (DBL) will launch its first Interleague Round in 2026, featuring teams from the Northern and Southern divisions competing against one another, according to DBL Ligaverbandes-Vorsitzender Armin Zimmermann. The format aims to increase competitiveness and fan engagement by exposing audiences to teams they might not typically see, Zimmermann said.

What Is the Interleague Round in the DBL?

The Interleague Round, set to begin with the Guggenberger Legionäre’s games against the Bonn Capitals on Saturday and Sunday, will pair the top three teams from the Southern division with the top three from the Northern division. The Southern teams include the Heidenheim Heideköpfe, Regensburger Guggenberger Legionäre, and Mainz Athletics, while the Northern teams are the Bonn Capitals, Untouchables Paderborn, and Hamburg Stealers. Each team will face their opponents four times, with results from the regular season carried over into the new phase.

Why Is the DBL Introducing This Format?

Zimmermann emphasized that the Interleague Round is designed to “make the league more attractive” by offering fans “more high-level games.” The format replaces the previous three-round system, which saw teams play the same opponents repeatedly. “It’s a full success already that the regular season ended on the last day,” Zimmermann said, citing the tight races in both divisions.

How Does the Playoff Structure Work?

After the Interleague Round, the top six teams will form the playoff bracket. The first and second-place teams will face the two Wildcard teams from the regular season, while the third-place team plays the sixth, and the fourth meets the fifth. The Wildcard Round will feature the three lowest-ranked teams from each division.

What Are the Current Standings?

As of the regular season’s end, the Legionäre hold third place in the Interleague standings with a 5-3 record, behind the Bonn Capitals (6-2) and Heidenheim Heideköpfe (6-2). The Heideköpfe secured the Southern division’s top seed with a 17-3 record, while the Legionäre finished second with 15-5.

How Are Players Reacting?

Regensburger Nationalspieler Alex Schmidt praised the format, calling it “a great idea” that allows teams to “play more high-level games.” Schmidt, a veteran shortstop, noted the similarity to a 2017 format in the 1. Baseball-Bundesliga, which also featured interdivisional matchups.

What’s Next for the DBL?

The Interleague Round will conclude in late July, with the playoff structure set to determine the league’s champion. Fans can follow the action through the DBL’s official website and social media channels.
