German Exports Drop in July Amid Weak Chinese and EU Demand

German exports fell by 0.8% in July according to official data published by the Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, disrupting a broader economic recovery and missing market forecasts. The decline in Europe’s largest economy was driven by weaker demand from both the eurozone and China, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in the export-led sector.

According to Destatis data, total goods exports dropped to €138.2 billion in July compared to the previous month. Financial analysts surveyed by FactSet had anticipated a more modest contraction, making the actual downturn sharper than expected by markets. This contraction follows a series of disappointing industrial production figures for the same month.

Regional Breakdown: China Slowdown and Eurozone Softness

The July pullback stemmed from broad geographic weakness, led by a 9.5% drop in shipments to China according to Destatis figures. Deliveries to other member states of the European Union also slipped, falling by 1.6% in the figures reported by Destatis, while Euronews noted a contraction specifically across the broader eurozone.

This regional softening disrupted a dynamic that had previously insulated German exporters. Despite the July stumble, overall exports for the January–July period remained up by 4% year-on-year, leaving the country with a trade surplus of €126 billion according to official figures, or €21.3 billion for the month of July alone as reported by Euronews.

US Market Resilience and Energy Shock Concerns

In contrast to the Asian and European headwinds, trade with the United States showed strong momentum. According to Euronews, exports to the US surged in July compared to June, as deliveries continued to rebound from the slowdown prompted by earlier tariff actions under US President Donald Trump.

The German economy had previously shown unexpected resilience in the first half of the year in the face of energy market disruptions linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The Ifo Institute noted in its September 3 report that order books had steadily improved since the beginning of the year, prompting the research institute to revise its 2026 growth forecast upward to 1.4%, compared with 0.8% initially.

Ifo Institute Outlook and Sector Sentiment

Despite the July dip, economic institutions maintain that underlying fundamentals remain intact. Ifo economist Klaus Wohlrabe stated in the institute’s September report that “the forces of the recovery take over” from geopolitical headwinds, pointing out that the Ifo export expectations barometers recorded their strongest monthly increase in August since June 2020.

Manufacturers specializing in electrical equipment, IT, computer goods, electronics, and optical products are driving this renewed optimism. While July highlighted the fragility of the rebound, institutions like Ifo continue to project annual growth between 1.2% and 1.4% for 2026, depending on whether European demand can offset ongoing weakness in Chinese markets.
