German Ice Cream Maker Rino Bernardi Aims for World Championship Title in Las Vegas
Rino Bernardi, a German ice cream maker from Ochsenhausen, is competing in the World Ice Cream Making Championships in Las Vegas this week with his unique flavor, “RedKing.”1 Ice cream makers from 18 countries are participating in the competition.
Four Years of Refinement for “RedKing”
Bernardi, who has run an ice cream parlor in Ochsenhausen with his family for 48 years, has been working on perfecting the “RedKing” ice cream flavor for four years.2 The flavor is a combination of pomegranate sorbet and honey ice cream.2 He previously achieved the title of German runner-up and is now presenting his creation on the world stage.
We hope everything works well. Everyone in Ochsenhausen wants us to have the title, but we have strong competition.
Family Support and Local Ingredients
At the World Championships, Bernardi will be making his ice cream fresh on-site before it is evaluated by a jury. He is receiving support in Las Vegas from his son, Ivo, who will also serve as an interpreter, as Bernardi, originally from Italy, does not speak English.2 His son Manuel Bernardi is managing the ice cream parlor in Ochsenhausen during his absence.
Bernardi emphasizes the importance of high-quality ingredients. He grows his own pomegranates in Italy, taking over a field from his grandparents, and sources honey from beekeepers in Upper Swabia.2
A Local Champion on the World Stage
Rino Bernardi’s success is not a solo endeavor. Thomas Micolino, an ice cream maker from Rottenburg am Neckar, is also competing in Las Vegas. Micolino is the godson and former trainee of Bernardi and has previously won the German championship with his “Kameleis” flavor.2
Bernardi’s ice cream parlor in Ochsenhausen is a well-known establishment, recognized for its unique flavors and quality, and is also a stop on the European Road of Gelato.3
