Germany officially took delivery of its first F-35A Lightning II fighter jet from manufacturer Lockheed Martin during a ceremony in Fort Worth, Texas, marking the beginning of a major modernization effort for the Luftwaffe.

Delivery Ceremony in Texas and Training Plans

Germany received its first F-35A aircraft on September 18, according to official manufacturer announcements and defense reports. The milestone follows the jet’s maiden flight on September 8. According to program plans, the initial eight F-35A jets will remain stationed in the United States at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas, where they will be used to train German pilots and maintenance personnel.

Replacing the Tornado Fleet for NATO Missions

The acquisition is part of a 2022 procurement agreement for 35 F-35A aircraft designed to replace Germany’s aging fleet of Tornado jets. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who attended the delivery event, described the platform as the most advanced fighter jet in the world and noted that it marks a new era for the German Air Force, pointing to its stealth capabilities, sensor technology, and platform integration.

The F-35A jets will take over critical tactical attack roles and support NATO’s nuclear sharing framework. The legacy Tornado fleet currently fulfilling those duties is scheduled for retirement in 2030.

Infrastructure Upgrades at Büchel Air Base

Preparations are already underway at Büchel Air Base in Germany to accommodate the incoming stealth aircraft. Facility upgrades include specialized maintenance infrastructure, advanced mission planning systems, enhanced cibersecurity protocols, and comprehensive logistical support networks. Aircraft deliveries directly to Germany are scheduled to run from the third quarter of 2027 through 2029.

Technical Capabilities and Fleet Integration

Manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the conventional takeoff and landing F-35A features low-observable stealth characteristics, advanced electro-optical sensors, modern radar systems, electronic warfare support, and robust data fusion capabilities. Once deployed domestically, the fifth-generation fighters will operate alongside Germany’s existing Eurofighter fleet, utilizing standard maintenance and training frameworks shared by international F-35 operators.
