High Energy Costs and the Loss of Cheap Russian Gas

The core vulnerability of Germany’s industrial base stems directly from structural shifts in global energy markets. For decades, energy-intensive sectors like chemicals, steel, and automotive manufacturing relied heavily on cheap piped gas from Russia. Following the geopolitical fallout from the conflict in Ukraine and the subsequent cessation of major pipeline supplies, German industrial firms have had to transition to higher-priced liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Domestic carmakers have responded by announcing cost-cutting measures, plant restructuring, and revised EV rollout timelines to protect profit margins against declining sales in key export markets like China.

Structural Reform Debates and Economic Outlook

Economists and policymakers are deeply divided on how Germany should reverse this industrial slowdown. The German Council of Economic Experts has repeatedly urged the federal government to accelerate bureaucratic deregulation, fast-track digital infrastructure projects, and reform the country’s strict constitutional debt brake—known as the Schuldenbremse—to unlock public investment in green technologies and grid modernization.
