Giro d’Italia Launches AI-Powered Fan Engagement Platform
The Giro d’Italia, one of cycling’s most prestigious races, has unveiled an AI-driven platform to enhance fan interaction during its 2024 edition, according to an official statement released on April 5, 2024. The initiative, part of the #GiroNextGen program, leverages machine learning to provide personalized race insights, real-time commentary, and interactive features for digital audiences.
How the AI Platform Works
Developed in collaboration with Italian tech firm TechCycle, the platform uses natural language processing (NLP) to generate tailored news updates and social media content. Fans can access AI-generated summaries of key race moments, while the system also employs predictive analytics to forecast stage outcomes based on historical data and athlete performance metrics.
“This technology allows us to deliver a more immersive experience for fans worldwide,” said Giro d’Italia CEO Marco Bianchi in a press release. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between professional cycling and digital audiences through innovation.”

Comparison to Other Sports’ AI Integrations
The Giro’s initiative mirrors similar efforts in other sports. For example, the NBA’s AI-powered “Game Insights” tool, launched in 2023, uses comparable predictive models to engage fans. However, the Giro’s focus on real-time, location-based data—such as rider telemetry and weather conditions—sets it apart, according to a report by SportTechZone.
Concerns and Opportunities
While the platform has been praised for its potential to boost global viewership, some critics question the reliance on AI for content creation. “There’s a risk of reducing the human element that makes sports storytelling compelling,” noted Dr. Elena Rossi, a media ethics professor at the University of Milan, in an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore.
The Giro d’Italia’s team emphasized that AI tools will complement, not replace, human journalists. “Our reporters will still provide in-depth analysis, while the AI handles routine updates and data visualization,” said Bianchi.
What’s Next for #GiroNextGen?
The platform will debut during the 2024 race, which begins on May 11. Organizers plan to expand the initiative in 2025, potentially integrating virtual reality (VR) elements for live broadcasts.
For now, fans can test the AI tools through a beta version available on the Giro’s official app, with full rollout expected by April 20. The move underscores a broader trend in sports media, where AI is increasingly used to personalize content and drive audience engagement.
