Golden Globes Rejects Michael Jackson Biopic Comedy Bid
The Golden Globes awards committee rejected Lionsgate’s submission of the Michael Jackson biopic Michael into the Best Comedy or Musical category, according to reports. The decision forces the $1 billion blockbuster to compete in the more crowded drama categories as the studio weighs whether to appeal before the October 31 submission deadline.
Variety reported that committee members reviewed a formal letter from director Antoine Fuqua defending the film’s musical structure, but ultimately concluded that the musical numbers functioned as performance re-creations rather than essential plot devices.
Golden Globes Rules Limit Musician Biopics in Musical Category
The rejection highlights a strict enforcement of Golden Globes guidelines established after past mid-2000s wins for traditional musician biopics. Back in 2005 and 2006, genre-bending entries like Ray and Walk the Line successfully competed and won in the comedy or musical races. That success prompted rule amendments stipulating that music must propel the story forward rather than stand alone as musical acts.
TheWrap noted that subsequent musical biographical films, including 2018’s Queen chronicle Bohemian Rhapsody and Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 feature Elvis, submitted exclusively as dramas. An exception occurred with the Coen brothers’ 1961 folk singer story Inside Llewyn Davis, which secured a comedy classification. Jaafar Jackson stars in the title role of the Antoine Fuqua-directed film, which opened on April 24 and became Lionsgate’s highest-grossing release ever.
Impact on Acting Races and Upcoming Deadlines
The classification shift alters the competitive landscape for Jaafar Jackson, who will now face heavy hitters like Matt Damon for The Odyssey in the Best Actor in a Drama category. Variety confirmed that supporting actor and actress categories do not separate entries by genre, leaving the awards campaigns for co-stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long unaffected by the ruling.

Lionsgate declined to comment on the committee’s decision. Studio executives face an October 31 deadline to file an official appeal, though industry sources indicate that a formal challenge will likely not be pursued. Nominations for the 84th Golden Globes will be announced on December 7, leading up to the January 10 ceremony hosted by Nikki Glaser.
