In a landmark antitrust ruling, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta found that Google’s practice of paying Apple billions of dollars to maintain its search engine as the default on Safari browsers significantly hindered competition in the search market. The court’s 2024 ruling determined that Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act by leveraging its financial power to block rivals like Bing from competing on equal footing. Google contested the ruling, arguing that the deal with Apple was a “no-brainer” for the tech giant.
