Pentagon Launches GenAI.mil with Google Gemini

“Today we launch GenAI.mil. This platform puts the most powerful AI models in the world, starting with Google Gemini, directly into the hands of every American warrior.” Pete Hegseth introduces himself to citizens as “Secretary of War”, even if on paper the Department of Defense has not yet changed its name (the bill for this is under consideration by Congress). The former soldier entrusted the announcement to a video message broadcast via artificial intelligence to “make the military more lethal than ever.”

GenAI.mil is a computing platform designed to host numerous artificial intelligence tools, such as advanced language models (LLMs). Department officials can use all the features incorporated into the system. The project is still in progress; “Gemini for Government”, is only the first algorithm integrated into the platform. And now it’s on the desktops of three million federal employees (both civilian and military personnel). In a press release, the multinational detailed its potential functions: summarizing manuals and regulations, compiling risk assessments, carrying out clever searches. Google insists on productivity and workflow rationalization.

The conglomerate was chosen by the “Chief Digital and artificial Intelligence” (Cdao), the technological arm of the Pentagon; Sundar Pichai, the CEO, recalled that «Google has collaborated with government agencies at all levels and for decades». But this is not an exclusive partnership; the Board of Directors has also signed three other large frontier platforms.
