Sundar Pichai Could Earn Up to $692 Million Over Three Years

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, is eligible for a compensation package potentially reaching $692 million over the next three years, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This plan, published on Friday, centers around performance-based stock awards tied to Alphabet’s performance, as well as the success of its subsidiaries, Waymo and Wing.

Salary Remains Consistent

While the potential overall package is substantial, Pichai’s base salary will remain at $6 million annually – unchanged since 2020. The vast majority of the potential earnings are tied to Alphabet shares, as well as those of its autonomous vehicle technology development subsidiary, Waymo, and drone delivery service, Wing.

Performance-Based Stock Awards

The value of the stock awards will fluctuate based on the performance of Alphabet, Waymo, and Wing. The allocation will be determined by the evolution of the share prices of these companies, as well as the amount of dividends paid by Alphabet. This structure incentivizes Pichai to drive growth and innovation across the entire Alphabet portfolio.

Clawback Provision

The compensation plan includes a clawback provision. Should Pichai be dismissed for misconduct, he would forfeit any unvested stock options.

Leadership and Recognition

Sundar Pichai has served as CEO of Google since 2015 and assumed the role of CEO of Alphabet in 2019. According to Wikipedia, the Alphabet board’s compensation committee has stated that Pichai’s incentive system has significantly benefited both Alphabet and its shareholders.

Comparison to Elon Musk

While this compensation package is significant, it remains considerably smaller than the potential earnings of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. In November, Tesla shareholders approved a plan that could award Musk nearly $1 billion over ten years.
