Google Expands SynthID Detector to Identify AI-Generated Media Globally

Google has broadened access to its SynthID Detector tool, allowing anyone worldwide to scan images, audio, and video files for digital watermarks left by artificial intelligence models. Apple AI content support will roll out in a subsequent phase.

How SynthID Digital Watermarking Works

The detection technology relies on an imperceptible digital watermark embedded directly into media files during the creation process. When a user uploads a file to synthid.com and logs in via a Google, Apple, or ChatGPT account, the detector checks for this specific cryptographic signature.

The system does not function as a universal AI detector capable of flagging raw files from any platform. Instead, it targets specific models equipped with the SynthID watermarking architecture. If a file lacks this signature or comes from an unsupported platform, the tool cannot determine its origin.

Global Scale and Daily Verification Volume

Since Google launched SynthID in 2023, the technology has marked over 180 billion images and videos, alongside approximately 240,000 years of audio content. Google notes that this expansion complements built-in verification features within Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, which collectively process more than 1 million requests daily.

This widespread integration provides journalists, platforms, and everyday users with a practical method to verify digital media origins. While the tool does not eliminate digital desinformation entirely, it introduces a reliable layer of context for navigating online content.

Frequently Asked Questions About SynthID Detector

How much does it cost to use SynthID Detector?

The tool is available globally for free through the official synthid.com website, requiring only a Google, Apple, or ChatGPT account login to begin analyzing files.

Which file formats can the detector analyze?

The detector accepts image, video, and audio files to check for embedded digital watermarks created by supported AI generators.

When will Apple AI content become detectable?

Google stated that support for content generated by Apple tools will arrive in a later phase of the rollout.
