Google Maps Gets a Gemini-Powered Upgrade with ‘Question Maps’ and Immersive Navigation

Google Maps is undergoing a significant overhaul, integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence to deliver a more conversational and immersive navigation experience. The updates, rolling out now, introduce the “Ask Maps” feature and a new immersive 3D navigation view, marking what Google calls its biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade.

Conversational Search with ‘Ask Maps’

The “Ask Maps” function introduces a new way to interact with the app. Users can now pose questions in natural language, rather than relying on traditional keyword searches. For example, users can ask, “Where can I charge my electric car and secure a coffee right away without waiting?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” Google states the application analyzes data from over 300 million locations and contributions from over 500 million users to provide relevant answers.

The feature is designed to be highly personalized, taking into account a user’s past searches and frequented locations. Gizmodo reports that Google will similarly leverage information it knows about the user, such as search history, to refine recommendations.

Immersive Navigation: A 3D View of the Road Ahead

Beyond conversational search, Google Maps is introducing immersive navigation, replacing traditional 2D maps with a detailed 3D display. This new perspective renders surrounding buildings, overpasses, terrain, traffic lanes, crossings, traffic lights, and greenery with greater fidelity. ABC News highlights that the goal is to create a user experience that closely resembles the view from a car windshield.

The immersive view utilizes a dynamic camera with “Smart Zoom” functionality, automatically adjusting the zoom level to provide a clear view of upcoming maneuvers. Before complex intersections, buildings become transparent, offering an unobstructed view of the route. The system highlights critical details like recommended lanes and potential transitions.

This transformation is powered by Gemini models that process current images from Street View and aerial photography, allowing the application to better understand the surrounding environment and accurately display landmarks.

Enhanced Voice Guidance and Real-Time Updates

Google has also improved voice guidance, making instructions sound more natural and conversational. Instead of abrupt commands, users will receive clearer, more human-like directions, such as “go through the nearest exit and turn at the next one.”

The app will now explain the rationale behind suggested routes, indicating whether an alternative path is longer but avoids traffic congestion, or faster but may involve tolls. CNBC notes that Google Maps receives over 10 million reports per day from drivers, including data from the Waze app, and checks traffic information every second.

Availability

The “Ask Maps” feature is currently available on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India, with a desktop version planned for release soon. Wired reports that the immersive 3D navigation is gradually expanding, initially launching in the US and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Google plans to expand availability in the coming months.
