Samsung Display Forges Dual-UTG Prototypes for Google, Oppo, and Vivo
Google, Oppo, and Vivo are preparing to adopt dual ultra-thin glass structures for their next-generation foldable smartphones.
The technology places one sheet of protective glass above the flexible panel and another below it. The goal is straightforward: reduce screen creases and improve mechanical durability.
Rigorous Process Verification and Supply Chain Alignment
Mass-production process conditions are undergoing rigorous verification. Engineers must account for each brand’s unique product structure, thickness targets, and durability thresholds.
To meet these demands, Samsung Display’s supply chain partner DolnSys is actively participating in the development of these new glass layers.
The Mechanics of Dual-Layer Glass Protection
The dual UTG configuration positions one layer of ultra-thin glass above the OLED panel and a second layer directly beneath it.

The upper glass layer covers an integrated window, measuring only tens of micrometers thick. This allows repeated folding while blocking external scratches and drop impacts.
Meanwhile, the bottom glass layer supports the OLED panel during folding and unfolding cycles. It achieves this by distributing mechanical stress near the hinge and reinforcing overall panel rigidity. By calibrating the physical properties of both laminated structures, manufacturers reduce surface deformation and center-screen wrinkles.
The Apple Pressure and the 2027 Road Map
Foldable smartphone manufacturers face constant pressure to eliminate crease lines and enhance screen longevity.
While Samsung Electronics took a different structural path with its wide-folding Galaxy Z Fold 8, the broader adoption of dual-UTG panels by Google, Oppo, and Vivo is expected to accelerate across the foldable segment through 2027.
