Google Pixel’s Now Playing App Officially Released
Google has officially launched a dedicated Now Playing app for Pixel devices, bringing enhanced music recognition capabilities to users. Previously an integrated feature, Now Playing now exists as a standalone application available on the Google Play Store.
Enhanced Music Recognition
The Now Playing app allows Pixel phones to automatically identify songs playing in the background. The app offers a more refined user experience with a dedicated interface, artwork display, and options to save favorite songs and quickly access them through preferred music streaming services. Users can also share identified songs.
Limited Initial Availability
Currently, the app appears to be limited to the Pixel 10 series, specifically the Pixel 10 Pro running the Android 17 beta. Other Pixel devices are currently showing as ineligible for installation, though Google is expected to gradually expand availability to additional devices.
Privacy and Functionality
The Now Playing feature utilizes on-device libraries to identify songs privately. For users who have enabled usage and diagnostics sharing with Google, the app collects data on recognition accuracy to improve performance. Pixel 4 and later devices benefit from federated analytics, a privacy-preserving technology that enhances the feature’s ability to recognize music. Users have the option to disable sharing usage and diagnostic data in their phone’s settings.
New App Features
The new app greets users with a message highlighting the ability to use cloud search for recognizing a wider range of songs, album artwork, and more. A prominent “Tap to see what’s playing” button activates the music identification feature. The current version of the app is v2026.03.02.877359875.0.
Accessing Now Playing History
Users can access a history of recently identified songs through the phone’s settings: Settings > Sound & vibration > Now Playing > Now Playing history. Learn more about Now Playing.
