Google and Sea Ltd. Partner to Develop AI Tools for E-commerce and Gaming

Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Singaporean technology conglomerate Sea Ltd. Have announced a strategic partnership to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools for Sea’s e-commerce platform Shopee and gaming unit Garena. The collaboration aims to enhance user experiences and streamline operations across both platforms, signaling a broader trend of tech companies leveraging AI to drive innovation.

AI-Driven Shopping Experience on Shopee

A key focus of the partnership is the exploration of an AI-driven shopping prototype for Shopee. The companies will jointly investigate building an “AI agentic shopping prototype” designed to improve product discovery, interaction with listings and the overall purchasing process. This initiative aligns with the growing trend of “agentic AI,” where AI models move beyond simple question answering to perform complex tasks like shopping across different applications and managing workflows. China’s Alibaba has also recently released an AI model geared towards this “agentic AI era,” highlighting the competitive landscape in AI-powered e-commerce.

Transforming Game Development with AI

Beyond e-commerce, Google and Sea’s Garena will collaborate to utilize AI solutions to improve the productivity of game development. The goal is to “transform” the process, potentially assisting game development teams in managing production and live operations. Garena may also participate in pilot programs related to Google’s latest AI research.

Building on Existing Collaboration

This partnership builds upon previous collaborations between the two companies. Shopee already participates in the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program, and Garena has worked with Google on the Free Fire League through Google Play. This expanded agreement signifies a deeper integration of AI technologies across Sea’s core businesses.

Shopee’s Dominance in Southeast Asia

Shopee currently holds the largest market share in Southeast Asia’s e-commerce sector, accounting for 52% in 2024, according to consultancy Momentum Works. This dominant position makes Shopee a strategic platform for testing and deploying new AI-powered shopping experiences.

Expanding AI Applications Across Sea’s Ecosystem

Sea’s chairman and CEO, Forrest Li, views AI as the “next big technology revolution” and believes it has the potential to reshape the company’s operations and create value in its markets. The partnership with Google is expected to accelerate the adoption of AI across Sea’s platforms, including its digital financial services arm, Monee. Monee will collaborate with Google on the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open framework designed to support AI-enabled payment flows.
