Google is investing $1.5 billion to expand its data center campus in Jackson County, Alabama, as the company scales its infrastructure to support generative and agentic AI models. The project, slated for development between 2026 and 2027, will be powered by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) grid, with long-term plans to integrate advanced nuclear energy through a partnership with Kairos Power.

The Jackson County expansion represents a significant increase in Google’s processing capacity within the Tennessee Valley. According to Google’s official infrastructure updates, the project is a direct response to the rising demand for computational power required by modern AI products, including those integrated into Android.

Google has committed to powering its operations with carbon-free energy. In 2025, the company entered a historic partnership with Kairos Power and the TVA to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs). This agreement aims to provide up to 50 megawatts of advanced nuclear power to data centers in Alabama and Tennessee.

While these nuclear facilities are expected to come online by 2035, Google currently relies on a broader portfolio of energy sources. To date, the company has contracted for more than 300 megawatts of new generation capacity within the Tennessee Valley. During peak demand, Google participates in demand response programs, intentionally reducing its energy consumption to support overall grid stability during extreme weather or periods of high usage.
