Google has confirmed plans to eventually retire ChromeOS, the operating system powering Chromebooks, with full security updates and support scheduled to run until mid-2034. As the tech giant introduces its new line of Googlebook laptops, consumers face a shifting hardware market that bridges traditional Chromebooks with a new operating system ecosystem.
ChromeOS Support Timeline and the Transition to Googlebook OS
Google established a 10-year support lifecycle for Chromebooks, ensuring that users who recently purchased devices will not be left stranded. According to a Google Help Center post cited by Engadget, devices purchased with support cycles stretching past 2034 will receive a transition path to Googlebook OS.
Google stated in the Engadget report on September 29, 2026, that it is committed to helping users migrate, noting that many recently purchased, eligible devices will feature a direct migration path to Googlebook OS. However, the company has not yet detailed the exact hardware specifications required for the upgrade.
Googlebook Laptop Pre-Orders and Hardware Availability
While the long-term phase-out of ChromeOS is underway, the transition will happen gradually. Google Vice President of ChromeOS John Maletis stated in May 2026 that new Chromebook models remain in active development, indicating that the two operating systems will coexist for several years.
Meanwhile, major hardware partners including Acer, Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and HP opened pre-orders for the inaugural Googlebook laptops in late September 2026. These new devices hit store shelves on October 4, 2026.
Enterprise and Education Management Plans
Beyond consumer hardware, Google outlined administrative timelines for institutional users. The company plans to launch the first device management tools designed specifically for Googlebook OS aimed at enterprise and education customers during the second half of 2027.
Google indicated that additional details regarding upgrade eligibility criteria and the mechanics of the ChromeOS-to-Googlebook OS transition will be released ahead of future rollout milestones.
